Naturalists/Outdoor Education Facilitator
YMCA Camp Willson is hiring a Naturalists/Outdoor Education Facilitator for our upcoming Spring Season! Come join us to facilitate fun and educational programs to school age children from all over.
Located just under an hour Northwest of Columbus, Ohio Camp Willson boasts 500 acres of beautiful scenery with a ton of great activities for all seasons, including our Giant Swing, Zipline, Archery Range, Astronomy, Pioneer Life at our authentic 1800’s cabin, Equestrian programs, Aquatic Studies, Canoeing on our glacier formed lake, and so much more!
The Naturalists at Camp Willson are given the opportunity to research, develop, and deliver our intentional programming geared towards the needs of our students’ and school’s selected curriculum. You will also be given the chance for professional development in many facets of camping that will steer your future career outdoors. If you are looking to make the jump into the year-round camping world Camp Willson is for you.
This is a live-in position with on-site housing provided, as well as all meals when there are groups on camp. You will also be given a weekly stipend to cover expenses.
The season will run from March- May with the potential to extend employment through the Summer and Fall depending on performance.
Description
1. Thinks, communicates and behaves as a cause-driven leader and role model for other staff and members when it comes to desired staff behaviors; promotes youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility in all job-related functions.
2. Research, develop, and deliver the established curriculum, based on the needs of the students’ age level and school-chosen curriculum.
3. Develop, maintain and improve program materials and supplies for the betterment of the program
4. Share in the necessary job responsibilities of the staff team on a rotating basis. (table setting, food waste etc.)
5. Lead and assist in the leading of daytime and evening recreational programs.
6. Actively participate in staff meetings, staff trainings and in-service activities.
7. Participate in any outreach programs or exchanges as necessary for the program operation.
8. Report facility, student, leader or teacher concerns to the immediate supervisor as necessary.
9. Provide a positive atmosphere for teachers, leaders and students; allowing them flexibility to meet their needs and program goals.
10. Keep chaperones and teachers informed of any child concerns related to health, safety, discipline and the program.
11. Provide a safe and responsible atmosphere for children to learn and grow.
12. As skill level dictates, provide emergency care to all participants.
13. On a rotating basis, assist the Conference Director on weekends (~ once every two months)
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
-Interested folks from all areas of study and camp experience are welcome to apply. Our biggest "requirement" is that our staff genuinely enjoy spending time with and teaching kids. We of course appreciate degrees in related fields and significant camp experience.
That being said typically the instructors that flourish here: Can manage groups big and small. Are willing and ready to go that extra mile to give the kids a great experience. Are more than willing to give up personal time off to help their fellow staff members.
-First Aid/CPR certification preferred.
-Willingness to live on-site or off-site.
-Passionate belief in the Y’s cause of nurturing the potential of all youth, supporting healthy living for all people and finding ways to help and support our neighbors.
-Understanding of the nature and purpose of the YMCA and the respective roles of volunteers and staff.
-Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
-Proven track record of developing authentic relationships with others.
-Ability to foster a collaborative team approach to solving challenging situations.
