Temporary Highway Maintenance Worker I
About the Role:
Under supervision of the County Road Superintendent and County Engineer, is responsible for performing general labor-type duties, hand and power tool operation, and intermediate level truck and equipment operation on various road and bridge projects.
Candidate Requirements:
- Requires two (2) years' experience in the operation of variable types of highway maintenance tools and equipment and general labor skills.
- Applicant must be 18 years of age or above with a valid Class D driver's license and a clean driving record.
- Candidates must successfully complete a standard background and criminal record check along with an alcohol and controlled substance test and physical exam. Costs associated with these exams will be paid for by the County.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provides assistance to highway maintenance crew with general labor duties.
- Asphalt patching, flagging, hand grading and weed cutting.
- Operate tractors equipped with mowers, disks and other attachments; operate other light and medium duty equipment including pavers, compactors and loaders.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Perform preventative maintenance and upkeep of equipment.
- Observe established safety practices and procedures when working with equipment.
Work Environment & Conditions:
This position will involve working outdoors in all extremes of climate and weather conditions. This is a temporary seasonal position ending approximately October 2025. Will work 10-hour shifts or longer with possibility of overtime. May also work less than 40 hours per week dependent upon workload criteria and/or weather conditions.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Applicant must have knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures, safe handling procedures with knowledge of industrial and traffic safety procedures, and knowledge of landowner rights and protection rights of private property.
- Applicant must have the abilities to perform the essential functions, with or without accommodation which may include but not limited to: extended sitting, lift and carry objects, bend, stretch reach, climbing, working and driving in low-light, low-visibility conditions, and work at various heights from the ground, on bridges, trucks and/or equipment.
