The Central Wasatch Commission is an inter-governmental entity with jurisdictions in the Town of Alta, the Town of Brighton, Cottonwood Heights, Millcreek City, Park City, Salt Lake City, Sandy City, and Summit County, with Utah Transit Authority and Metropolitan District of Salt Lake and Sandy as ex-officio members, and Save Our Canyons and Solitude Mountain Resort as Special Advisors. Description of the Role

We are looking for a highly motivated and organized intern who will conduct broad research into designated Recreation Areas, Conservation Areas, and National Monuments across the United States. The Central Wasatch Commission offers four-month internships throughout the year in the Spring (January — May), Summer, (May/June — August), and Winter (September — December).

 

Responsibilities

  • Conduct robust research and produce a comprehensive report on the history, designation timeline and process, community engagement process, and establishment outcomes and impacts of national conservation and national recreation areas across the United States.
  • The report should include specific focus on the economic, recreational, environmental, and transportation impacts in the case studies.
  • A GIS map or aerial imagery should be included in the research report, if available.
  • Conduct interviews with the land, water, and road managers, indigenous communities, and other stakeholders to be included in case study reports.
  • Meet weekly with the CWC Communications Director for guidance, and to set weekly and monthly research and reporting benchmarks.
  • Periodic check-ins and status reports with other CWC staff.

 

Qualifications for the Role

  • This internship is for college and university students currently matriculating in subjects including environmental, sociological, or sustainability studies.

Working Conditions

  • Light physical effort. Mostly comfortable working positions, handling light weights, intermittent sitting, standing, and walking; and
  • Frequent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior and the requirements of the job.

 

Offered Compensation

  • $15/hour;
  • Potential for school credit;
  • A hybrid work week, with days in-office, and days working from home, with in-person meetings as necessary; and,
  • Use of a CWC laptop computer.

 

Reports To

The CWC Communications Director.

The Interview Process

  1. The CWC staff will review your application materials.
  2. If you meet the required qualifications for the role, you will be invited to participate in a formal 30 minute interview with the selection committee during which you’ll be asked a series of pertinent questions.
  3. The selection committee will deliberate.
  4. You may be asked to interview for a second time.
  5. The selection committee will make a final decision and contact you.
