Summer Camp Camper Consultant/ Case Worker

Salary $4,000 (June 22, 2025 - August 1, 2025)

Remote Portion of Job begins beginning of April - June 20 and is also $4,000

General Responsibilities – To assist cabin counselors in ensuring a successful camp experience for each child. Providing counselors with tools to manage problem behaviors and by working directly with campers who have more serious problems that cannot be handled by the cabin counselors (serious behavior issues, child abuse, severe homesickness, etc.)


1. Involvement in the total camp program with willingness to assist in all areas as needed, including dining room, campfire programs, canteen, children with problems, etc.
2. Promote observance of spiritual emphasis program and of the moral and ethical code affecting campers and staff.
3. Attend and contribute to staff meetings.
4. Responsible for sharing with the Program Director and Village Leader all matters of concern relating to the total welfare of the camp.
5. Responsible to observe set curfew.

Minimum Qualifications
• A personal relationship with Jesus Christ and a desire to share your faith with others
• Minimum 21 years of age
• Degree of training in education, counseling, children’s ministry, or another related field
• At least two summers of camping experience working directly with children. Experience working with urban children preferred
• Completed at least junior year in college (college graduate preferred)
• A committed Christian able to utilize Christian principles in counseling
• Desire to work with children and teens outdoors
• Ability to relate to one’s peer group
• Ability to accept guidance and supervision
• Good character, integrity, and adaptability
• Strong clerical and organizational skills

Specific Responsibilities
1. Serve as resource in child behavior and development and especially with respect to campers who have problems in camp.
2. Prior to campers' arrival, read all camper applications and special notes relating to campers. In consultation with the Camp Director’s, assist in making cabin assignments, generally being guided by age and cabin integration with special assignments because of behavior or health problems if necessary.
3. It is the responsibility of the Camper Consultant to protect the confidentiality of camper applications, sharing information only as necessary for the child’s welfare and with careful discretion.
4. Communicate on a frequent basis with the Camp Director’s regarding any camper issues (behavior, early departure, cabin changes, etc…).
5. After arrival of all campers, submit a correct roster to the Camp Director, Nurses, Village Leaders and Program Director. This must be completed no later than the end of lunch on arrival day.
6. Counsel children, especially those who are having difficulties in camp and, if necessary, provide them with an individualized camping program.
7. Confer with the Program Director and Camp Director, if necessary, as well as with other staff members as needed, regarding individual campers, the handling of campers, acting as helper, interpreter, facilitator, and coordinator. The Camp Director has the ultimate responsibility for any camper or staff member and no major decisions are made without that appropriate input.
8. Responsible for camper reports, explanation of camper reports to counselors, assisting counselors in preparing reports, adding comments if indicated or completing the supplementary report.
9. Act as liaison between camper, camp and Corps, parents and/or sending agencies - with approval of Camp Director.
10. If it is necessary for a camper to leave camp, direction and approval shall be obtained from the Camp Director. Also, it is important that the following steps be taken:
(1) Complete early departure form.
(2) Complete arrangements with cabin counselor, transportation, agency and/or family.
(3) Arrange for chaperone while child returns home if parents cannot pick them up.
11. Act as a coach to the Counselors who are experiencing challenges with campers. Provide ideas, advice and strategies while making sure the Counselors authority remains intact.
12. Assume share of responsibility in turn as assigned for night duty and routine chores between periods.
13. Share in the staff evaluation process.
14. Confer with the Program Director and Village Leader on a regular basis to insure smooth operations of the camp.
15. Maintain a functional relationship of supervision to Village Leaders, Senior Counselors and Relief Counselors.
16. Maintain an organized method of camper files and documentation.
17. Compile a list at the end of each session indicating those campers that should not return for another session along with supporting documents.
18. Write an evaluative brief at the end of each session to include areas of concern for next camping session/season. Make recommendations for equipment, supplies, and program.

Additional Responsibilities
1. Aid and support to all program areas as assigned.
2. Assist Program Director in planning and preparation for total –camp activities.
3. Assist with preparation of tabernacle and other buildings for opening and closing days, Sundays,
and other special programs. Preparation includes cleaning, moving chairs, sweeping, moping and vacuuming.
4. Lead with the registration and departure of campers.
5. Take part in evening programs as assigned by Program Director.
6. Arrive at least ten minutes early to scheduled activity periods, evening programs, evening
recreation, meetings, etc., to assist or lead in set-up or preparation of programs.
7. Attend and participate in weekly leadership staff meetings.
 

Staff Responsibilities
1. Clean living area daily.
2. Work as a team player.
3. Committed to the development of campers spiritually, physically, educationally, emotionally, and socially.
4. Willing to work with all staff members regardless of their positions.
5. Maintain a high level of interaction with campers and staff.
6. Be a constructive member of the staff contributing in every way possible to the health, harmony, and happiness of the Star Lake Camp family.
7. Pray that each camper comes to know Christ as Savior.
8. Attend weekly staff Bible studies. These take place one evening per session.
9. Attend Sunday morning staff worship.
10. Voice criticisms to the Camp Director first.
11. Be in accord with camp aims and policies, being loyal to camp always.
12. Assist where needed for the benefit of the campers and the smooth operation of the camp.
13. Respond positively to the direction of the Program Director when he/she makes schedule changes.

Essential Responsibilities
1. Ability to participate fully in the total camp program*.
2. Ability to communicate and work with groups of various ages and skills levels, and provide necessary instruction to campers and/or staff.
3. Physical ability to respond appropriately and quickly to situations requiring first aid.
4. Cognitive and communicative abilities to plan and conduct activities that achieve camper development objectives.
5. Ability to identify and respond to hazards. Must be able to assist campers in emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury).
6. Respond immediately to assigned area in the event of a missing camper alarm.
 

- These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned, and other duties may be assigned as required.
 

*Please note that full participation means that although you may not have an assigned responsibility you are required to attend and participate in the various daily programs of camp, such as evening programs, camper worship, cabin devotions, etc…
