Summer Camp Lifeguard

Summer Camp Lifeguard

Salary $3,250 (June 22, 2025 - August 1, 2025)

General Responsibilities - To coordinate Star Lake camp’s aquatic activities, maintaining Health & Safety standards that lead to a quality program.


1. Involvement in the total camp program with willingness to help in all areas as needed, including dining room, campfire programs, children with problems, evening programs, etc.
2. Promote observance of the spiritual emphasis of the program and the moral and ethical code affecting campers and staff.
3. Attend and contribute at staff meetings.
4. Responsible for sharing with, Camp Director all matters of mutual concern relating to the total welfare of the camp.
5. Responsible to observe set curfew.

Minimum Qualifications
• A personal relationship with Jesus Christ and a desire to share your faith with others
• College student or at least 19 years of age
• Training and experience in waterfront activities
• Current life guarding (LGT) certifications
• Current CPR and First Aid Certifications for the Professional Rescuer
• Desire and ability to work with children and adults outdoors
• Ability to relate to one’s peer group
• Ability to accept guidance and supervision
• Good character, integrity, and adaptability
• Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
Responsible To - Camp Director, directly supervised by the Waterfront Director.

Specific Responsibilities
1. During Full Staff Development, works with Waterfront Director to set up waterfront area and teach staff their responsibilities in free swim.
2. Follow all safety standards as outlined in American Red Cross, NJ Health Department, The Salvation Army and American Camping Association manuals.
3. Take care of minor first aid issues (splinters, scrapes, etc.) and refer major medical situations to the Health Center staff.
4. Properly care and maintain all waterfront equipment.
5. Assist in the proper care and cleaning of the waterfront by raking sand, picking up garbage, and storing all equipment.
6. Assist with all waterfront activities as assigned.
7. Report all maintenance issues to Waterfront Director.
8. Assist in the development and implementation of a waterfront program geared to the ages, interests, and abilities of campers.
9. Assist in testing and classifying the swimming ability of all staff and campers.
10. Keep records on all participants; help them progress from beginner to advanced levels.
11. Assist in camp staff supervision in waterfront related activities.
12. Assist in record keeping and in keeping waterfront areas and equipment in order.
13. Assist in planning, preparation and conducting special waterfront activities.
14. Assist with the planning, preparation, and implementation of the evening programs, as assigned.
15. Write lesson plans, with help of waterfront director, that foster participant’s aquatic skills.
16. Award recognition and participation certificates for swimming advancements to campers.
17. Conduct daily check of equipment in area for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
18. Submit orders for equipment and supplies when needed, with approval of Waterfront Director, ensuring timely arrival of materials.
19. Teach and monitor proper use of boating equipment.
20. Assist in packing all materials and supplies at end of season.
21. Write an evaluative brief at the end of each session to include areas of concern for next camping session/season. Make recommendations for equipment, supplies, and program.
 

Additional Responsibilities
1. Aid and support to all program areas as assigned.
2. Assist Program Director and Assistant Program Director in planning and preparation for total –camp activities.
3. Assist with preparation of tabernacle and other buildings for opening and closing days, Sundays,
and other special programs. Preparation includes cleaning, moving chairs, sweeping, moping and vacuuming.
4. Sit at camper overflow tables or monitor bathrooms in the dining hall as assigned on a rotating basis.
5. Spend one night each session either sleeping out with cabin groups at the camp-out site or serving night duty for a cabin.
6. Assist with the registration and departure of campers.
7. Take part in evening programs as assigned by Program Director.
8. Arrive at least ten minutes early to scheduled activity periods, evening programs, evening
recreation, meetings, etc., to assist or lead in set-up or preparation of programs.
9. Participate in night duty on a rotating basis.
10. Attend and participate in daily program staff meetings.
 

Staff Responsibilities
1. Clean living area daily.
2. Work as a team player.
3. Committed to the development of campers spiritually, physically, educationally, emotionally, and socially.
4. Willing to work with all staff members regardless of their positions.
5. Maintain a high level of interaction with campers and staff.
6. Be a constructive member of the staff contributing in every way possible to the health, harmony, and happiness of the Star Lake Camp family.
7. Pray that each camper comes to know Christ as Savior.
8. Attend weekly staff Bible studies. These take place one evening per session.
9. Attend Sunday morning staff worship.
10. Voice criticisms to the Camp Director first.
11. Be in accord with camp aims and policies, being loyal to camp always.
12. Assist where needed for the benefit of the campers and the smooth operation of the camp.
13. Respond positively to the direction of the Program Director when he/she makes schedule changes.
 

Essential Responsibilities
1. Ability to participate fully in the total camp program*
2. Ability to communicate and work with groups of various ages and skills levels, and provide necessary instruction to campers and/or staff.
3. Physical ability to respond appropriately and quickly to situations requiring first aid.
4. Cognitive and communicative abilities to plan and conduct activities that achieve camper development objectives.
5. Ability to identify and respond to hazards. Must be able to assist campers in emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury).
6. Respond immediately to assigned area in the event of a missing camper alarm.
 

- These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned, and other duties may be assigned as required.
 

*Please note that full participation means that although you may not have an assigned responsibility you are required to attend and participate in the various daily programs of camp, such as evening programs, camper worship, cabin devotions, etc…
