Arts & Scraps reimagines recycled industrial materials to inspire people of all ages to think, create and learn.

Hours per week: 25 hours per week; Some evening (typically 3-9pm) and weekend hours will be required. Approximately 50%/50% in person and remote. Internship Dates: June 2 – July 25, 2025

Compensation: $3000 stipend/$15/hour (paid in two installments; midway through the internship and the remainder upon completion)

Job location: Arts & Scraps Warehouse, 16326 Harper Detroit, MI 48224 & various locations throughout Detroit and surrounding cities; Intern must be from Metro Detroit, currently based in Metro Detroit or plan to relocate to Metro Detroit and be able to reside in Metro Detroit throughout the duration of the internship

The Educational & Community Programs Summer Intern will assist in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational and community-based programs. They will both support and have opportunities to be mentored by Programs Department & other key Arts & Scraps Organizational Leadership and Staff to develop and maintain new and existing Arts & Scraps Educational & Community Programming. The Educational & Community Programs Summer Intern will gain valuable experience in many skills such as education & classroom management, nonprofit leadership and management, program design and implementation, curriculum development and implementation, STEAM, Environment and Sustainability work, Youth & Family Community Building and more. This position will work most closely with the Arts & Scraps Programs Manager and Program Lead while being managed by the Programs Manager.

Job Description:

Program Design, Implementation & Coordination - 45%

  • Support design and implementation of educational & community based programming
  • Collaborate with staff to develop engaging, age-appropriate program activities
  • Manage program materials, including organizing and preparing creative reuse resources
  • Support outreach efforts to engage participants, families, and community partners
  • Foster an inclusive and welcoming environment for all participants
  • Gather participant feedback to improve program offerings and experiences
  • Maintain accurate records of program attendance and outcomes
  • Assist in creating promotional materials, such as flyers or social media posts
  • Help with scheduling, event logistics, and communication with stakeholders
  • Work closely with the program team to brainstorm new educational and community program ideas
  • Stay informed about trends in creative reuse, education, and community programming
  • Share insights and contribute to discussions about improving program impact.
  • Attend professional development workshops & learnings
  • Help with registration/coordination of all programs where necessary
  • Attend check-in meetings with Programs Manager and/or Program Lead

Instructing - 30%

  • Teach Arts & Scraps’ STEM based curriculum using inquiry-based teaching and art integration
  • Facilitate children developing and building ideas (not creating traditional art) at locations in the Metro area with a focus on Detroit
  • Engage with children providing social emotional learning and support
  • Lead student workshops and other extended programming during summer out of school time programming hours which includes during the day and on weekends with some evenings
  • Prepare learning materials as needed
  • Complete lesson plan tweaks to accommodate given audience
  • Administer quick and easy assessments where necessary or required
  • Ensure that all Arts & Scraps rules, policies, and guidelines are adhered to in each space in which instructing is taking place

Curriculum - 15%

  • Work collaboratively with the Program Lead to develop & implement Arts & Scraps Inquiry Based Learning Curriculum
  • Use State and National Standards for curriculum development
  • Create STEM curriculum using Arts & Scraps Educational Philosophy & Values
  • Create material lists for other Arts & Scraps departments
  • Test and experiment with potential curriculum challenges & ideas
  • Log lessons in Arts & Scraps curriculum templates
  • Curriculum resource gathering

Additional/Other Duties - 10%

  • Provide direct support to the Program Lead
  • Attend Programs Department Meetings and any additional internal meetings as necessary
  • Attend all Applebaum Programming Sessions (June 10th, 24th, July 8th, 22nd, 2025)

Job Requirements:

  • Advanced undergraduate student (junior or senior) working toward a degree in education, nonprofit management and leadership, sociology, psychology or a relevant field
  • A minimum of one year working with children in a classroom or equivalent setting
  • Passion for the arts, STEM, education and/or working with children from all types of backgrounds; specifically BIPOC children
  • Interest in inquiry-based learning
  • Ability to work with a wide diversity of people
  • Strong administrative skills necessary; ability to develop and maintain strong systems of organization and communication
  • Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written
  • 1-3 years of experience using GDrive, Microsoft 365, Slack and email
  • Valid Driver’s license and current car insurance, access to a vehicle during working hours
