Deloitte

Financial Auditor

August 2018 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

Deloitte is a great place to start your career. The work is challenging and there is a steep learning curve, but everyone is invested in your success.

What I wish was different

Be proactive in your job search as soon as possible. There is a strict timeline for recruitment in Public Accounting. The earlier you can get exposed to accounting firms the better. I recommend joining as many accounting clubs as you can (while keeping your GPA stable) and attend the events that they host. Accounting clubs will serve as the main pipeline for students looking to work in Public Accounting.

Advice

GPA is important for the Big 4, but it is not the only factor. Being able to network effectively, and standing out with extracurriculars (jobs, clubs, volunteering) are equally important in securing an interview.

Consulting Analyst Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved my experience at Deloitte. I really enjoyed the dynamic nature of the work and bonded with the people there. Also lots of events and perks (e.g. free dinners on your corporate card)

What I wish was different

Unfortunately you do not get to pick the projects you work on over the summer, so you don’t know exactly what you’ll be doing until you get there.

What I wish was different

Cyber Riks Consultant

June - August 2018 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

The culture was great. The work life balance that Deloitte focused on was also excellent. They treated the interns so well and always has things going on for us to do.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship would have been a little longer. Eight weeks is pretty short for a summer internship.

Advice

Hard work at my internship didn’t go unnoticed and while it can be easy to not take the internship as serious as you should, it can hurt you and your chance of not getting an offer.

Financial Advisory Intern

June - July 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

- The interview experience as a whole (real work, treated like an adult, dependence on the intern) - the people - the resources at Deloitte are unbelievable.

What I wish was different

- I wish the internship program was longer so I had more time to spend with my team

Advice

- NETWORK. You never know who you will need in the future and networking gives you the ability to access a diverse pool if individuals

Audit and Assurance Intern

June - August 2018 • Omaha, NE

What I liked

I really love this company and what I got to do. The team I worked on was motivated and pushed and challenged me to learn and grow. Every day I woke up excited to see what I would encounter at work.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had been longer and I was able to do more in the day-to-day. Since it was the off-season for audit, the employer was sometimes struggling to find work for me to do.

Advice

Ask a lot of questions and be prepared to learn and be challenged.

Audit Intern

June - July 2018 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

The structure of the intern program and how it was a very hands-on experience. I was felt like I was starting there as a first year staff.

What I wish was different

Advice

Ask a lot of questions. If you don't understand something, don't be afraid to ask the people around you. They are there to help you and really don't expect you to know anything initially.

Summer Scholar Business Technology Analyst

June - August 2018 • Rosslyn, VA

What I liked

I loved the culture at Deloitte. There are a lot of young people who are motivated, smart, and social. I became very close with my intern class. We hung out very often on the weekends and after work. As a Summer Scholar, you are treated very well - full time employees take you out to coffee, lunch, dinner, and drinks quite often.

What I wish was different

Advice

Take advantage of every opportunity you have. It is easy to use being tired as an excuse to skip various events, but going to them helps you expand your network. You never know who you are going to meet at the events and the opportunities they can offer you.

Risk Consulting Intern

June - August 2018 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Very structured internship with lots of resources to help me. I had an on-boarding adviser who is 2-3 years into his career. He was my go to guy for day to day questions. I also had a career counselor who is further into his career and he is there to help me navigate through the complex corporate structure at Deloitte. I also had the freedom to explore the different functions within Advisory. I gained a better understanding of all the services Deloitte advisory had to offer.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a structured way of rotational experience. I had to personally network with professionals from the different functions in order to get those shadowing experiences. It would help new hires have a better understanding of the full breadth and depth of Deloitte service offerings if they get to experience the different functions first hand through a structured rotational program.

Advice

Take control of your internship experience. They say in the hierarchical system, interns are at the top. People seldom would say no to an intern so take full advantage of that. If you want changes to happen you should be proactive about it.

Pioneer Intern

June - July 2018 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

I liked that I was treated less like an intern, and more like a regular employee. Everyone was willing to teach me something new, and what I did was very flexible and wasn't set in stone.

What I wish was different

I wish I had had more experiences that were hands on since I spent a lot of time simply watching what full time employees were doing.

Advice

I would suggest trying to get to know everyone you encounter, even if they are in a field you aren't interested in because they all have valuable lessons to offer.

Accounting Intern

June - July 2018 • Parsippany-Troy Hills, NJ

What I liked

I loved being able to meet people from different schools from all over the country and being able to experience the program with them. I also liked being able to expand my network of professionals and fellow peers during my experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten more of an understanding of the advisory side of Accounting. I was only really exposed to the tax (specifically Business Tax Services) component of Deloitte's service lines.

Advice

I would make sure to talk to as many people as you can and ask them about what they do and how you can improve as an intern.

Consulting Intern

June - August 2018 • Denver, CO

What I liked

I loved the ability to travel, to work on projects that mattered, and to live a lifestyle I had never seen before.

What I wish was different

I wish that my day-to-day experiences had been different a bit. I struggled with the notion that I wasn't making an impact within my firm due to the mundane tasks I was assigned. I wish I was able to take ownership of a certain item.

Advice

Internships are the best way to secure a full-time offer due to the fact that most interns are asked to return. Junior year, work so hard to secure an internship, and then the full-time offer will be practically given to you.
