Macmillan

Extern

August - September 2023 • Akron, OH

What I liked

It gave me a chance to further develop my Office skills; utilizing ScreenPal and Powerpoint. It was engaging and fun to communicate between sales and record voice overview for the videos.

What I wish was different

Since this was an extern, remote position, there is not much that I wish was different besides the chance to have a longer position; however, this short-term role did inspire me to apply for further opportunities in the future.

Advice

Take the chance; if it's not to develop skills or learn something new, the experience will prove itself fruitful. The coordinators are extremely kind and amicable to work with, the scheduling is very flexible, and the workload is very manageable. You will learn something new about yourself and working, even if you don't feel the most qualified, the experience is worth it.

St. Martin's Press Art Intern

May - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Working in the book publishing industry was and still is my dream job. At Macmillan, I learned more about the book cover art process, from routing to proofing, to document setup for print. The working environment was very friendly and welcoming. It's so easy to network, and also free books! What I loved most is how passionate everyone who worked at Macmillan was. The designers, the editors, production teams...everyone loved their job, and it showed! Many worked at Macmillan or within publishing for years. It was a great internship opportunity!

Publicity Intern

May - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Right off the bat I was able to start working on projects that were important to the day-to-day functions of the department. The weekly Lunch and Learn sessions were really helpful both in giving a time to hang out with the other interns and in being an opportunity to ask candid questions about the publishing industry to professionals in various departments.

What I wish was different

That there had been more projects for me to do most days. The department I worked for was fairly small, and there were times where there just wasn't anything for me to work on.

Advice

Ask questions! The culture at Macmillan is pretty relaxed, and I felt comfortable asking my supervisors why a process was done a certain way or things like that, which really helped me to learn more about the publishing industry.
