Operations Financial Analyst Intern

June - August 2020 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Everyone in the company was super kind and helpful! Always willing to set up a meeting, answer a question, or point you in the direction of someone who may know more. Learned a lot on the job, no pre-work necessary for the internship. They had tons of great resources for you to learn new skills. Gave lots of flexibility and ability for you to learn and grow in whatever way you wanted.

Customer Returns Associate

May - July 2020 • Lexington, KY

What I liked

The pay was better than the other available options. The process of getting hired was straightforward and not frustrating. The benefits were generous.

What I wish was different

The job was physically demanding; if there was a way for Amazon to design its work to be less stressful, I would have appreciated it.

Advice

Wear compression leggings and wear good shoes for the physical demand of the job; you have to be on your feet for all of the jobs.

Software Developer Intern

May - August 2020 • Silver Spring, MD

What I liked

I liked the learning experience of the job. Although Amazon requires their employees to be highly knowledgable with the basic concepts of cloud computing and programming, your colleagues are willing to help you learn and teach you things. The company has an internal training platform where you can watch videos about the technologies the company uses. This is helpful so you can practice and become familiar with the job before hand. I also liked how welcoming the community was. I had never attended meetings, or written documentation about my technical projects before so I appreciated the fact that my mentor was willing to walk me though these tasks. The practice I gained from reviewing my work really helped me when it came time to give my final presentation out loud to the other teams.

What I wish was different

This was my first internship experience and I had to work from home due to the COVID pandemic. A lot of these cons are not fully controllable but I will share them anyway. I wish that I had more time to attend the virtual intern events. There were times where I was so consumed by my project that I was unable to focus on having fun and networking with other interns/engineers. I also did not like how the conflict in time zones made me feel like I had to work longer hours in order to "be on the same page" as others. There was not really much of a work life balance due to that. Finally, I wish I had spoken up more and asked more questions when I was confused or wanted to disagree with something.

Advice

I advise any future intern to not be afraid to ask mistakes. You're there at the internship to learn. You will have to ask a lot of questions in addition to asking for help. It may feel awkward at times doing so but in the end you will have gained more knowledge and experience. Accept as many new tasks as you believe you can handle and make sure to reach out to other people even if they are on different teams. They will remember you that way and it'll be a lasting impression!

What I liked

Amazon did a great job in developing its interns, instilling their leadership principles, and providing a learning experience that will be beneficial in my career regardless of which path I take.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to work in person, but with the pandemic, the intern program did a great job accommodating the virtual platform.

Advice

Living by Amazon's leadership principles is not only beneficial in the workplace but applicable to many different areas of life.

What I liked

The people at Amazon are very sharp and very knowledgeable. They've always taken the time to mentor me, and I learned more in my three months there than I did in six months of class.

What I wish was different

I wish Covid didn't happen so I got to actually live in Seattle.

Advice

Being able to get straight As in school is easy compared to staying on top of work at Amazon. No matter how industrious you think you are, you're going to learn how to work harder.

May - August 2020 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I liked being given the chance to take ownership of my project from beginning to end, including designing it and developing it

What I wish was different

My internship was virtual, and so I had to work on Pacific time despite being in Eastern time. I wish I had some more flexibility in my work hours, but understand why it made sense to work based on the team's hours.
