Amazon

Software Development Engineer Intern

June - August 2020 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Worked with really cool technologies, everyone on the team was really smart and kind and helpful. I learned a ton.

What I wish was different

I had a poor work/life balance trying to keep up with the demanding pace of my internship. But I'm happy now that I sacrificed over the summer to receive a return offer.

Advice

In a virtual work environment, it is very important to maintain a relatively structured schedule. Also, at least at Amazon, there is a ton of documentation on pretty much everything you would need. I found it much more useful to scour documentation than asking someone for help directly.

Software Engineer Intern

June - September 2020 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Team was very supportive and friendly, Amazon was very adaptable to online learning environment and didn't cancel the internship. They sent a laptop, monitor, and other materials. They had a planned out project for the summer which had a tangible impact and was feasible for me to complete.

What I wish was different

I wish they told me what team I would be on before I accepted the offer.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask your mentor/manager for help all the time, always work on unstucking yourself so you aren't blocked for long periods of time. It's their job to help you and they really don't mind!

Software Development Engineer Intern

June - September 2020 • Sunnyvale, CA

What I liked

The work was challenging since I had to understand the team and all the systems, design my project, and complete it all in the duration of my internship. The scale of my project was intimidating at first but once I started working, I surprised myself with how much I was able to learn and figure out. I also learned a lot from my teammates and mentor, especially from their code reviews. They were very supportive and encouraging throughout my internship.

What I liked

I liked the pace of the work, it was quick and there was always something to do. I also enjoyed my co-workers, all of them were great to work with and very helpful.

What I wish was different

The management and organization was not great, there were times I wasn’t completely sure on what I was supposed to be doing, especially when I first started, and had to get help from co-workers.

Advice

I would give the advice of preparing yourself mentally, as you will be doing repetitive tasks most of the time which can sometimes become a lot.

Software Development Engineer Intern

July - September 2020 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Utilizing all the various services at Amazon, participating in team discussions and getting insights into the company, and actually working on a non-trivial project.

What I wish was different

That it wasn't actually virtual (although it couldn't be helped due to the pandemic of course) because i had to learn so many new things on my own. Of course I could always ask my team for help but it's not the same as just asking someone next to you if you were in the office. I think the virtual nature wouldn't be as bad had I been working in the industry for a while, but since I'm just an intern, it did have quite a few drawbacks.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask for help and/or feedback on how you are currently performing, as it is the best indicator of your current status regarding a return offer (if that is your goal). Ask a lot of questions, especially in the beginning, so your goals are clear and you and your employers expectations are properly set.
