Campus Ready Associate

June 2018 • Lubbock, TX

What I liked

My favorite thing about working at Amazon are my co-workers. They always manage to make work fun and make it feel like we aren't actually working. Every time I come into work I am actually excited to go because of my co-workers.

What I wish was different

I wish I was off on the weekends. I use to work on campus before I got this job and I was always off on the weekends. So it was kind of huge adjustment that I work basically every day of the week.

Advice

One piece of advice I can about this experience is to make it known that you want a job by going up there and trying to talk to the manager. The more face time you are able to get the better the chance they will hire you.

Software Development Engineering Intern

May - July 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Amazon has a great design process for engineering products that is centered around detailed document writing. It was a great skill to learn. My project was challenging yet doable and provided experience that would help a full time hire hit the ground running. The work-life balance was very good.

Advice

You have a lot of control and say over what you think is doable and how high you set your goals. Establish clear milestones with dates and set the bar high.

What I liked

Great amount of opportunity, but get ready to work hard to be successful. There is a great support network but you have to put in effort. Amazon rewards effort handsomely.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

- interesting tech stack - room built into internship to learn new technologies

What I wish was different

- didn't feel like project was very impactful - diversity and inclusion at Amazon are subpar (e.g. maybe 5 women engineers total in 70-engineer org, and almost no engineers that are not white or Asian)

Advice

- good internship experience if you're interested in learning about specific technologies, but bad company culture, especially for underrepresented groups

Sales Ops Intern

June - August 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I loved the versatility, and ability to talk to people from other teams whether it was within my org or outside. I loved that my management invested so heavily into my professional development, giving me challenging projects to stretch my realm of knowledge.

What I wish was different

I wish that this program was a little more structured from the University Recruiting side - they were disorganized, often didn't answer or gave incorrect answers to big questions.

Advice

Have an open mind. Amazonians believe STRONGLY in their leadership principles, and talk about them every day in every context. They also thrive in ambiguity: this could be with roles, projects, direction of the business; the most important part is to be flexible and to be hungry to learn.

Financial Analyst Intern

May - August 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Amazon gave me great insight into working in corporate finance at a tech company. Everyone was so intelligent and willing to help. The hours were great and HR worked well with interns too.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was more choice on team placement. I chose to be under Retail but ended up working on the Transaction Risk Management Service team for digital products.

Advice

Amazon encourages self-service. While everyone is always willing to help, I liked having the responsibility of owning one project from beginning to end entirely by myself.

Floater

June - August 2018 • Tigard, OR

What I liked

The atmosphere was authentic and genuine. Everyone was for the most part trying to to a good job and deliver quality service and product to customers in a way that was helpful and friendly. I enjoyed getting to know my co-workers and working different shifts allowed me to gain experience in different departments as well as expand my knowledge of working with different customers/co-workers.

What I wish was different

I wish I had started sooner. While it was pretty busy work, it was stable and regular, giving me some much needed structure for my summer. I got to know some of the people I worked with, but if I had been given a longer contract I could have gotten to know them better.

Advice

Always put 100% into your work and interactions with people and they'll appreciate the effort (even if they're having a bad day). Some people won't think much about it, or will expect more from you, but doing your best will be your best witness when peer reviews and supervisor meeting come around. Not to mention being friends with people (like your supervisor/boss) is much easier than being enemies.
